I've been CRANED!
Well, it finally happened last week.... There I was, minding my own business, quietly comfortable in the fact that our lovingly nurtured goldfish were content in their functional if not necessarily architecturally elegant little pond, when I looked out to see that a huge, gray crane had offered each of my largest fish a cozy warm place to spend the winter.
And, fish-brained idiots that they were, many had apparently accepted the crane's offer.
So now all I have left are a few middling-sized gold fish, shaking like chihuahuas, neurotically awaiting their seemingly ineluctable fate as crane food. And a bunch of no-account minnows masquerading as baby goldfish but more probably the fish-pond equivalent of river carp.
I'm thinking of getting something really interesting when I stock the pond this time. Maybe some alligator gar (more exotic than piranha, don't you know)--something that would give the next crane a run for his money, since I'm told the BB gun solution is illegal...
In the meantime, I guess my next trip out will include a trip to a store where I can buy an alligator decoy--I hear those work fairly well as a deterrent against predatory avians. Not as good as the real thing, perhaps, but easier to maintain.
But that's just a stopgap measure... what I'm really looking for is some fauna with spirit. Like the frog in the below pic. :-)
